The Wizard of Oz flies into Long Eaton

Hot on the heels, or possibly the glittering ruby slippers, of the BBC programme to select a Dorothy for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s forthcoming production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in London next year, Long Eaton Operatic Society pre-empt him with their production of the show in October.

Following on from their success with ‘The Likes of Us’, LEOS are delighted to be presenting this colourful family show that the Long Eaton public were able to have a sneak
preview of at Long Eaton Carnival. With the characters of Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, Wicked Witch of the West and various Munchkins on the float, LEOS won the category of Best Adult Float for the third consecutive year.

For those who have not seen the iconic Judy Garland film, the story is about young Dorothy Gale who lives with her Aunt, Uncle and pet dog, Toto, on a farm in Kansas. A nasty neighbour tries to take away the dog and, because her Aunt and Uncle won’t help Dorothy keep him, she runs away. However, she is caught in a violent storm and is transported to the magical and colourful world of Oz.

Here, she meets both Glinda, the Good Witch of the North who gives Dorothy a pair of magical ruby slippers, and the Wicked Witch of the West who wants those slippers for herself. As Dorothy wants to go home to Kansas, the Munchkins who live in Oz, tell her to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and the mighty Wizard of Oz who will help her.  On her journey, she meets and makes friends with a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who also want help from the Wizard.

However, during their journey, they come across many different characters and the Wicked Witch of the West is never very far away……

Featuring classic songs such as ‘Over the Rainbow’, ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’, the show promises to be a spectacle that will brighten up any dark winter night.

Tickets for the show (£9.50, £8.50 & £7.00), which is being presented at May Hall, Trent College from 26th–30th October can be reserved by ringing the Box Office Manager on 01332 874352.
